Steve at our 50th Reunion

A few years after graduation I moved to Boise, Idaho and joined the telecommunications group at Morrison-Knudsen Co in 1976. Except for a brief stint with Weyerhaeuser Company in 1980-81 I was with MK until 1986 as Manager of Technical Operations and Network Planning. From 1986-94 I was a Sales Account Manager in Boise and Kirkland, Washington handling major accounts and designing and implementing networking systems. I joined the Washington Community College System in 1994 as their Principle Network Architect and in 1998 moved to the University of Washington as the Washington K-20 Educational Network Program Manager. I retired in 2010.

Jim Dosdall and I left Salem late in the summer of 1962 for the east coast: Jim headed to Harvard and I to Columbia. It was a great trip! I spent two years at Columbia, participating in rowing, New York culture, and to a lesser extent academics although I was learning all the time. After my sophomore year I spent a year working construction in North Dakota. 1965 was not a good year for low draft numbers if you were not in school; consequently I spent 1965-67 in Germany where I got my first computer experience. In 1967 I returned to Oregon (Eugene), worked in several different jobs and completed a BS in Political Science at the University of Oregon (1971).

The highlight of the last 50 years was meeting my wife, Jill, in San Francisco. We married in 1980 and have two fantastic children, a super daughter-in-law and our first grandchild as of April this year. Jill has been the moving force behind the wonderful life we have had in Boise, Gig Harbor (WA), Sammamish (WA) and, now, Lowell (OR) where we completed construction of our new home in 2009.

Over the years our kids were active in various sports and we have enjoyed many basketball games, soccer matches and rowing regattas. I coached and refereed youth soccer for many years and also served several years on the Board of the Sammamish Rowing Association (WA). Our son Ben just completed his residency in Family Practice at the University of Washington and will be working for Group Health in Everett, WA. His wife, Kelly, is an MD/PHD just starting her residency in Internal Medicine at the UW. Our daughter, Ali, graduated from the UW in 2007 with a BS in Biochemistry and Biology, then spent 2 1/2 years in Mali, West Africa with the Peace Corps, and will be starting graduate school this fall in the Botany Dept. at the other UW, the University of Wisconsin.

As you all know there seems to be even less time during retirement but we enjoy filling it with kayaking (we love Waldo Lake), hiking, outdoor classes, trips to the coast (much quieter over there on weekdays), trips to Seattle to see Grandson Matthew, and much more. We have also become more involved in our local community and I currently serve on the Lowell Planning Commission, Budget Committee and Parks Advisory Committee. I still enjoy reading, am learning the game of “Go”, would like to row again (despite bad shoulder) and seldom encounter a subject area that is not interesting or worth investigating.
