From Shirlye Munkres Sonsteby: I got to know Larry only after I talked him into coming to our first McNary event in 2013. He came to the event, played golf, and I met his very sweet wife. We chatted for a long time, and I learned a lot about him. He was very modest about his amazing artistic talent. He worked as an artist for the Air Force, the State of Oregon, and 2 newspapers. Later he launched Kassell Concepts, a graphic design and commercial photography studio in 1976.
Larry continued on with his art and photography, and loved cartooning. In 2007 he decided to "stay home and paint, paint, paint" but continued with some advertising, writing and commercial photography, having too much fun to retire.
Larry will be sorely missed by his family and many friends, and I feel very lucky to have known him for the past few years. He is survived by his wife, as well as 6 kids, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
