Larry Mahan will definitely go into rodeo's history books as one of the greats of professional rodeo and one of its first mainstream media stars.
Mahan developed a talent for rough stock events-saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, each requiring an entirely different style and skill- that has been matched by only a few in rodeo history.Using those skills, Larry captured a total of 8PRCA World Championships - 2 PRCA Bull Riding World Championships and 6 PRCA All Around Championships, a record that stood for 25 years, earning him a place in the Guinness Book of Records. Escaping major injuries after 1200 rodeos, he retired from competition in the late 1970's. Larry was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1966, the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. The PBR honored him with their highest accolade - the Ring of Honor. Additionally, the PRCA awarded Larry one of its most prestigious awards during the 2010 NFR - the Legend of ProRodeo Award- for outstanding leadership in the arena, in the home and community. He is past President of the Rodeo Historical Society of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum and a trustee of the PRCA board. A published author, his book Fundamentals of Rodeo Riding is in its second printing.
The 8 time World Champion has a knack for doing things on his terms - a guy on a 95 point ride through life. Dividing his time among his Colorado and Texas ranches, doing charitable work for children's advocacy programs, personal interviews, working in broadcasting and promotional work for the Milano Hat Company and Cavender's Western Stores which handle the Larry Mahan signature line of boots, hats and shirts - nothing much has changed, least of all the pace at which he operates.
A closely knit family rounds out Larry's life. He is the blessed father of 3 children. Daughter, Lisa and son, Ty live nearby in Dallas and the "baby" Eliza is in Austin, a recent ( cum laude) graduate of the University of Texas. Larry's wife Julanne is a long strided, 6 ft.blonde horsewoman who studied dressage, played polo, showed jumpers and cutting horses. She is currently a rancher with a cow/calf program at the Oklahoma division, producing F-1's and Brafords that consistently top the market.
